Maatin Brewing

In the past 9 months I have been obsessed with craft beer in China. I picked up this hobby of craft beer in the U.S, but it wasn't until I came back to China and found local craft breweries that I really began digging into it. In the past months, I met a lot of brewers, bartenders, and pub owners and started to get myself into this group. I consider craft beer, not only as an alcoholic beverage, but also a complicated and contested expression of the sense of place, localism and globalism.

Craft beer in China has just started, and home brewing is an even more niche hobby. Homebrewing seems like a natural thing for me to do because I can understand the ingredients and be savvier with processes that make significant differences. Through the lens of geography of making, meanings emerge through the practices of crafting, naming, labeling, and sharing. I found this performative facet of craft beer really intriguing.

Anyway, I am going to brew my first batch(es) of beer this weekend, which will be IPA, Pale Ale (tea infused), Kolsch (normal and honey infused), and Berliner Weisse. It will take a month from brewing to drinking. Let's see what is going to happen!

Updated May 24th 2021: I have brewed multiple batches already! It is fun and inspiring. More updated information please see here: maatin brewing instagram
